The city authorities of Zhytomyr, in partnership with the public and international organizations, will develop and implement a strategy for the transition of the city to 2050 for full energy supply with 100% of renewable energy sources.
The relevant memorandum was signed by Zhytomyr city mayor Sergey Sukhomlin on June 22 and Julia Pashkovska, a representative of the international non-governmental organization “350.org”. The parties announced their intention to cooperate and implement joint measures to implement integrated climate and energy policy in the city of Zhytomyr.
Now, with our international partners, we are working on a large number of energy efficiency measures. It is also important for us to reduce CO2 emissions in the city. Work is under way on the transition of Zhytomyr to LED lighting, thermo-modernization of objects of the budget sphere. We have already developed a municipal energy plan, in the process of writing the Concept for integrated development of the city: the 6 priorities have been developed, one of which is the “Green City”. Such steps are important for the development of Zhytomyr, – said Sergey Sukhomlin.
According to the press center of the Zhytomyr City Council, specialists of its executive bodies together with experts of “350.org” will study issues concerning the energy transition of Zhytomyr to 100% of RES, will develop the city’s relevant strategy and involve the public in the process of forming local climate and energy policy, in particular Renewable energy development and energy efficiency.
350.org is an international public organization that brings together hundreds of thousands of activists around the world to address the greatest challenge for humankind in the 21st century – to overcome the problem of anthropogenic climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the main source of which is the combustion of fossil fuels.
This year, 350.org in Ukraine participated in the “Cities for Life” campaign with 12 community of Ukrainian cities. From 12 to 20 in May, during the Days of Action, more than 16 climatic events will be held in Kyiv, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Poltava, Dnipro, Rivne, Vinnitsa, Kryvyi Rose, Zaporozhye, Khmelnytsky, Berdyansk, Brody and Rozovtsi (Zaporizhzhya Oblast).
“Cities for Life” is an international campaign initiated by 350.org, which aims to unite the efforts of the public and municipalities to develop and implement long-term climate strategies in the cities of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
