According to the Minister of Energy, financing for the construction of the Centralized spent fuel storage facility (CSFNP) was found within one year.

The National Atomic Energy Generating Company “Energoatom” and its contracting organizations plan to complete the construction of the first phase of the Centralized Storage of Nuclear Fuel (CSFP) by the end of the 2018 year, which is being built in the exclusion zone and will serve to store fuel for three Ukrainian nuclear power plants. We over one year found funding and launched the construction. The first stage should be launched by the end of the 2018 year, – said Igor Nasalik, commenting on the construction of the TsSNFP.

In early June, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the project of construction of the Central Environmental Fund for the year 2017. In this storage, with the use of state-of-the-art dry storage technology, Holtec International will safely store nuclear fuel from Rivne, Khmelnytsky and South-Ukrainian NPPs for 100 years. (At the Zaporizhzhya NPP, 2001 has been operating an offshore storage facility for spent nuclear fuel). Due to the lack of its own storage Ukraine is forced to spend about $ 200 million each year to pay for services on the export and processing of spent nuclear fuel in Russia.

The contract for the construction of TsSNNP between Energoatom and Holtec Internatinal was signed in 2005 year, but for a number of reasons, including due to changes in the political situation, the project was actually frozen for a long time. The real work on this project was restored in 2014 year.
